Installing textures easily!
Ok, so I wanted to create my own textures but I didn't know how and there's no documentation on it. Its actually amazingly simple, although it doesn't seem that way until you know how to do it. So, just so it's written down here it is:
First, take a copy of the minecraft.jar file and extract it with WinRAR, depending upon what you want to edit you'll need the terrain, dirt, or GUI .png files.
Next, you'll need something to edit it with. The standard paint program that comes with Windows will suffice, but I much prefer paint.net; it's much simpler and much more effective. I will post the download link at the bottom of this tutorial.
Finally, open the .png file of choice with the paint.net program and you're free to edit as you please.
If there are any questions just post them here.

I'm gonna try this sometime... oh wait... I'm free... does that mean the hack won't let me?
Depends on what you mean by free. If you mean you haven't bought the actual game it doesn't matter. You just need the hacks.
it keeps giving me a retarded black backroung behind my curser (im using paint)
0neWingedAngel, you need to use a program that supports transparency. Basically, anything but Paint. I'm not sure if Paint.net supports transparency or not, but I know Photoshop does.
Paint.net does support transparency. If for some reason you would rather have Adobe Photoshop, you would have to pay for it. Paint.net is free.
Paint dosint support transparency but there is a program called paint.net witch supports transparency and the best part is its for free! Use paint.net when changing things with transparency.
This will definitely help, thanks!
GIMP also works
ok so when you edit the .png and drop it in the extracted files, how do you get the files back to a minecraft.jar. All i can figure out is to make it a .rar. Help plz
I can't believe that you are the real Anne.
Don't make it a rar file. Use WinRAR's View tool to get into minecraft.jar.
ok, i have followed all instruction, and when i edit the pic with paint.net then replace terrain with the new terrain. nothing happens
All you need to go is that you edit the terrain.png in minecraft.jar, after creating a backup, and saving it as the exact same file in minecraft.jar.
Anything you did wrong in there?
i did that, here is my pic, if i can find out how to upload it....
nothing different
FOr this to work: USE 7zip!!! then open the file folder containing mincraft.jar in the file manager, extract the contents, edit as you please, then OPEN not extract minecraft.jar and put the edited .png file back in. (the one you edited from the extracted minecraft.jar)
THIS DOES NOT CHANGE YOUR CHARACTER TO EVERYONE ELSE'S EYES
all it does is change how you see everything else
what does it mean ist just symbals what do i do
Ok, here is a walk through a blond can follow. Pictures included
Found out myself how to make stuff transparent. Use the eraser on them, background is white and lite gray blocks when transparent.

I have edited the size of terrain.png, to double size so the textures are better. My problem is i get a fire right in the centre of the brick block, as that is the position in the original file. Is there any way around this?
ive seen HD texture packs before and im trying to make one of my own. i did the same thing as timmystwin and the game keeps crashing. how do you force the game to accept a higher resolution?
can some one make nice trees and leaven
i mean leaves
I changed the texture but it ended up being all transparent.. Anything I edited was invisible and when you hit something, the cracks didnt show up and the block turned black D:
Does anyone know if theres a software to design textures without digging through files on my computer?
Hello! I am trying to create my on texture pack but I cannot find the file for the actual terrain blocks such as dirt, sand etc. I have found the Items, Armour and mobs and such, but not the terrain itself. Can someone tell me the folder and name or give me suggestions?

I forgot to mention that you shouldn't change the name of the files once you save them, and they also should be placed into your skin folder.
