Minecraft Classic Server No external Url

With both the minecraft vanilla classic and with opencraft my server shows <html> inside the externalurl.txt and I then have no way to access it. I have it set to public and it doesn't show up in the minecraft or World of Minecraft list. In opencraft I constantly see errors it can't get heartbeat.
It's being hosted on a Debian 6 VPS, all ports are open.
Any help fixing this?
