Hello,

The title says it pretty much. I just wondered if there is
a way to play the game over LAN without having a connection to the
Internet. I can't always access the Internet, but I'd like to be able to
play the game with my brother over LAN. Hope somebody can help me.

Thanks
in advance,
Merik

Well

You have to have an internet connection with LAN, cause LAN works on the internet.  The difference between the massive multiplayer and LAN is that LAN only interacts with other systems that are connected to your network, while the massive multiplayer interacts with all systems (in this case, all of the people who play minecraft).  And from what I have heard, you cannot play minecraft over LAN.  However, in your server.propterties, there is an option to make your server private, and the server won't show up on the list, and then you hand out the server URL so that people can play.

Concerning LAN

LAN certainly does not work over the internet, and you do not need an internet connection to use LAN. LAN stands for local area network. It is a network in which computers can recognize and connect with other computers and exchange data with them.

To get back ontopic, it is not possible to play minecraft over LAN. You can however do what Nikalus said (but then it is not via LAN, it's just on the internet, but private). Maybe Notch will add that later?

Thanks for your answer. You

Thanks for your answer.

You made this way too complicated. I know how LAN / Internet / MMOs work, I just wanted to know if I can play the game in a local network without being connected to the Internet. Sorry, it's hard for me to express myself clearly in English, because I'm not a natural speaker.

Whatever, you also said that you don't know of a possibility to play over LAN, so you answered my question. Thanks alot.

Merik

EDIT: I just read your post, Shade. Thank you, too. We can only hope that this'll be included later. ^^

If you get it working could

If you get it working could you inform me plz. I would like to play over LAN as well.

But on this topic of  LAN, My server won't let anyone on LAN connect. they keep getting the error saying the server might be down. Anyone know how to fix this? I'm using the MC Sharp server package.

*To the admins - I know this is a post asking for support for the MC Sharp server. But I don't know where else to ask. especially seeing as DAY7 no longer has their own server files for download, or has info on it.

If you have some way to find out what the problem is. Plz inform me.

My dad and I have found a

My dad and I have found a way. The only time you need internet is to download the Minecraft Alpha server software (Warning: This software is very, very buggy and may include: 1. not seeing the floor on first login 2. Not losing health 3. Never seeing an attacking mob 4. Regenerating bricks). Here are step by step instructions:

1. Go to Minecraft.net
2. Next to the Alpha options click on Download
3.Scroll down and click on Minecraft Server.exe
4. Save the file in a new folder. (It won't save as .exe, but type it in after the file)
5.Open the .exe file.
6. Running it will create many folders. Go to server.properties. (Open with notepad)
7. Change online mode to false.
8. Then open up command prompt and type in ipconfig and find your ipV4 address. This is the servers ip.
9.Start up minecraft and click on multiplayer.
10. Type in the your ip (This applies to any computer on the network) and you will enter your server.\

Note: If your server shuts automatically the first time then restart it and it should work.

Also, there are many cool features you can do with the server software and also the server properties.

.

(Im using MC BETA 1.5_1 and MCServer BETA 1.5_2)

Hi there, sorry for waking this thread up, but I wanted to play on a LAN-Server too without having Internet connection. My 2 friemds are living in a place where no cheap inetcon is possible (only ISDN), so we cant play online together.

My Question: Has someone tried or can try the option of Monjhall? I could connect one client to the server, but before wasting 15 euros i wanted to be safe with this working.

I doubt this in working cause i think this might not work, because all ACTIVATED (so once legally online, all 3 with different accounts), but OFFLINE clients may login as "Player" and therefore only one can be online at one time.
Can someone please confirm/disprove this theses? Thanks for that.
