3d hardware to 3d software

When I first downloaded World of Minecraft to my laptop, it asked if I wanted to use 3d hardware or 3d software. I(being an impatient teen) picked 3d hardware. Now when I run the client I get this error "java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: input ==null".
I've searched the error and basically everyone says to delete anything minecraft and update java, then redownload minecraft. Well that didn't work.
I downloaded World of Minecraft to my other laptop, which compared to my first it is a piece of sh*t. It asked the same question about the 3d hardware and 3d software. This time I chose 3d software, and presto it runs the client.
Everything is up to date on my laptop. I think the problem may be the question(and i just chose the wrong one). How would I go back and reanswer the question????
