I know one guy who does... But you need to have an up-and-running server first and he needs to decide it's good enough for him to pay the hosting himself.

If you don't want a hosting
If you don't want a hosting company, i suggest u get a cheap laptop and host the server on that. Of course, you will need to pay for the laptop, but if you do it on your current computer it will slow down a lot.

its going to cost money any way that you look at it so really you will need to put money up to host a server.

Hosting a server costs money. I highly doubt anyone has/knows a server provider that provides servers for free.
