can't play online

Hello,
I just cleared temp internet files, cache and cookies and now MC will only play offline. When I am on the home screen the only option is to play offline regardless of which profile I use. I am using a pc running windows 8. any suggestions?

No, the server weren't down, just a new client version came out.
