So, here's my problem, with as much info as I can think of / think is relevant.
When I join the smp server, I'll get a few moments where I'll be fine, I can move, everything is fine. Then all of a sudden everything freezes up. My whole minecraft freezes, or goes completely "Not responding". It will then be glitchy, sometimes letting me do stuff, sometimes not. And then I'll have to close it. But to close it I have to end it from the task manager, I can't even get the x button to work on the window because of how frozen it is.
This mostly only happens in the smp server. Yesterday I joined it for the first time since it came back, and I was fine for probably about 15 minutes. Then this started. Now I can get at most a minute before it happens.
Last night, after giving up on the smp server because this keeps happening, I joined a friends personal server, which is running vanilla with 1 or maybe 2 plugins. Just so we can change the time and change the weather and such. It happened maybe 2 times in that server in the whole 3 hours I was on it. But when it happens there it's just a quick 10 second glitchy moment. I freeze for a second, but then just as quickly it's over and I'm fine for a long time after.
Was talking to Lunick in irc and he was trying to help me, gave me some runtime parameters to set (-xmx2048m). That didn't work either.
He had me watch the memory and see where it was glitching out at. It gets to 900,000K memory just fine, 901,000K was where it started freezing.
Relevant Comp Specs:
Win 7 32-bit
4gb of ram in 2 2gb sticks.
Yea, I did a forced update when it started happening thinking it might help to start fresh. No dice.
I can't vouch for the teleporting thing since I couldn't type even / if I wanted to, much less anything else.
For me it happens everywhere on the ground, that's all I've been able to get to. I was trying to find a place to build when it started, so I've just been walking around the map. (Well, walking around the same small area really since I keep having to start my walk over)
I have all these problems also, but only on SMP.
But when it happens there it's just a quick 10 second glitchy moment. I freeze for a second, but then just as quickly it's over and I'm fine for a long time after.
Happening to me in singleplayer. Can't say the same for any other server because World of Minecraft is the onnly server for me. \o/
Just tested the teleporting theory, didn't work for me. Now I'm just frozen in a different place.
And per Neils' request I check if it happens in single player, it did not. Stayed stable.
This is the crash report I'm getting .

I'm not getting a crash report at all because mine isn't really crashing. And I haven't done anything to my minecraft since I did a forced update.
Ok so I had this problem before with my latop that had 2GB of ram. I know you have 4GB but that doesn't mean its not the same probelm.
-------You don't have to do first but its what I would do -------
I would first try getting rid of minecraft. Yes that means the .minecraft in %appdata%.
----I Think Plan "B" Is the One You Are Having Probelms With----
Plan B, Try looking up your internet connection to the World of Minecraft server. Try going to http://www.speedtest.net and try pinging all other the world. See if the internet is like 1.74 Mbsp download and like 0.20 Mbsp Upload. If so that means your internet is to slow.
It may be that your friends server is closer to you then World of Minecraft is and you are not sending and retrieving info fast enough which means you would get lag.
I use Comcast which I have the lowest of it but I get no lag. If you want you can get it and try it out and see if it was you internet provider.
Then if that seems to not work. Plan C comes in. If you are not using a batch file to run minecraft, I think you should try it. I have my laptop running off of it and I seem to get some lag but not much. The format is:
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui
The last thing I can think it would be is your hardware. You need to have a good graphics card to run the game without glitches and lag. But I think you don't have problem with this one if it works on other servers.
Hope you find this helpfull.

"A true friend when you get to know him" :P
I've tried this after performing a forced update to my minecraft, it still has the same problem. Wouldn't that be the same as if I were to delete it and reinstall it?
As for the internet connection to the server: I've had the same problem on another server, it just seemed to be usable for longer lengths of time there.
I just did a test on speedtest from myself in the midwest of the US to California which is a ways away. Got 10.21 mbps download, 4.06 upload, 80 ping. Seems fine to me. For reference to where my friend is with his server it's 9.59 download, 4.25 upload, 44 ping.
It's definitely not a problem with the graphics card, I'm running a brand new build, brand new gigabyte 660.
And I don't know enough about software or programming or coding or w/e to know or do whatever you said. And since I don't know even how to do that I don't want to. Even if I knew what to do with it, I don't know what it does.
Tried using Optifine? It seems like a bit of a wild guess but it couldn't hurt I guess.
When it started using I had run mcpatcher. Would optifine do something different?
Edit: I just tried instaling optifine. It seemed like it was stable for a small amound longer, but not much, and then the same stuff started happening all over again.
Lunick i tryed to use Optifine but it didn't work well...
I think it will be fixed crash when there is new update coming...
You said,
"For reference to where my friend is with his server it's 9.59 download, 4.25 upload, 44 ping."
IF you can get World of Minecraft to tell you where the server is really hosted then you can see what the ping is to the server.
I see that a 44 ping is not the best and that tells me why you have some lag on your friends server. But you need to know the ping from World of Minecraft SMP.
If you still have probelm just message here again, I'll see what I can do after that.
I this fixes it.

"A true friend when you get to know him" :P
But I don't have lag on my friend's server. I can play for hours without a single problem. On the rare ocassions I have any lag it lasts less than 10 seconds, if that.
Doing a test to where I believe the server to be I get average results of:
49 ping, 11.90 download, and 4.14 upload.
Doesn't seem to me like my connection should be the problem.
Also, I do have the same problem on another large server I tried it on, but there were larger instances of working between the broken frozen periods.
Downloaded 64 bit java (which I should of had anyway :o) and played for 5+ hours without this happening.
I don't think you can use 64 bit java with your 32 bit computer, though. :/ Try turning on OpenGL (if its off) and change render distance to normal. (or even less)
Just deleted all minecraft from my computer and reinstalled. Didn't work.
Anyone got any suggestions? Please? I can play on small servers with my friends, but I can't play on World of Minecraft at all. No fun.

IF YOU HAVE A 32-Bit PC DON'T USE A 64-bit JAVA. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LASTEST VERSION TOO
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I don't think 64-bit Java even works with a 32-bit OS.

If you still have lag on World of Minecraft SMP try next tip
=================================
Turn your Music to 0%
Turn your Sound to 0%
=================
Still don't work try this
=================
Make sure your using a RJ-45 cord. Thats the LAN Line cord. I say this because WiFi can't get as fast as LAN. My WiFi can go 54Mbps.
Most LAN Lines can get 100Mbps. I like running my PC off of LAN. I Get no lag on any of my computers that use RJ-45 cords.

help135, whomever you are, I think I love you. I did the steps in the first section and now it works. I don't know where the problem was, but it works, that's good enough for me. Thanks :)

This has been happening to me too and I am fairly certain it was supposed to (but isn't >->) fixed in 1.5.1.
Extra info for people who want to solve this:
Teleporting fixes the issue (although it's next to impossible, given the 1 FPS and crash)
It has only happened to me near my mine or while flying.
Haven't been watching memory usage, but adding more memory to Minecraft seemed to make it crash more frequently. (1 GB of memory crashed me immediatley the first time and after 2 mins the second time) No matter the memory, it can crash ranging from immediately to hours.
