Hello everyone!
Just thought I'd introduce myself.
Long time gamer, but completely new at Minecraft Multiplayer. Have played some Singleplayer, but looking for a bit more "liveliness" and hopefully that comes when playing and building in a world that has other players in it.
Not exactly sure where to start since there seem to be thousands of Minecraft servers out there, but through my good friend Google I ended up here, so hopefully this is the place to be for me.
From what I've seen so far on the forums it seems friendly and peaceful, just what I'm looking for.

I found this server through minecraft.net. It has a link leading to this website, This must be a pretty cool website/server since the link is on minecraft.net lol

Ok, I'm gonna start right away with asking a simple, but for me confusing question:
I have joined the server and "zoned" into the SMP area. I ended up in a town where people were selling items/goods etc.
It all looked very nice, but....where do I find a place to explore/dig/build as I am used in doing in single player mode? Do I have to walk out of the town? (I tried but it's immense, didn't find a border yet where the town goes over into "normal Minecraft world")
Or is there somethign else that I need to do?

Go as far as you can go, you can start to build about 500 - 1000 blocks from spawn, most of that before 500 is all built on and what not.

Might be easiest to try and buy or get someone to let you borrow a horse at spawn. That should get you out into the open fairly fast.

You could also warp to a town, (list of warps in spawn) Then head a little ways out from the town and start building.

Generally it'd be a lot faster to just ask somebody on the server, but if it's a question you can't seem to get an answer to then a new thread would probably be the best option.
