how do we finds these play.jps urls?

Maybe i'm retarded, but when i start the client and log in, i dont' see a "Server" button, which i've read about in the forums.
I know the ip address of the server i want, but i have no idea how to generate a minecraft.net/play.jsp server link from that.
I can't find it on the forums, and forums have no search function that i can find....
any help would be appreciated... or perhaps just writing some instructions or a tutorial somewhere on the site... i mean one that actually covers this
