i have a mac and i know people are having problems with setting up a server, i spent hours trying to figure it out thru tutorials and nothing worked so i wiffed it and tried whatever i had so here is how i opened a simple private server using my mac osx.

1. open up minecraft.net and go to download next to in browser
2. scroll to bottom and second last sentence press the link that says minecraft_server.jar
3. after this download there is a sentence which should make no since, you need to copy part of this. copy... java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar(dont copy what i wrote down i might have typed something wrong so look it up instead and copy it yourself from minecraft.net)
4. next we will need you to enter terminal...this is a form of database and how you enter this is go to top right of your screen and click the magnifying glass. if you dont see it find some way to search you mac for apps and type in terminal. (the emblem is a black box with a >_ in it)
5. once you open terminal there should be whatever on it, it doesnt matter.  what you want to do is paste that sentence you got from minecraft.net into your terminal page AND MAKE SURE YOU PUT IN A SPACE AFTER THE LAST JAR from your paste... this is necessary for it to work.
6.  what you need to do next is minimize terminal  grab your downloaded minecraft_server.jar file you got from minecraft.net and drag that to a desktop, what i did is i made a folder for your minecraft server on your desktop cause for when you start it there will be floating files added and this keeps it all in one spot, and this may actually be some answers to why some peoples server are not made, so i really recommend doing this to.
7.  Next you will open your terminal and from where you made that space after jar you will drag the minecraft_server.jar straight into terminal by pressing and holding your mouse and litterally pulling it in, then hit return or enter in your keyboard...if done correctly a new page called minecraft server will open and numbers and letters will scroll down the page(this makes your server).
8. now that thats done go ahead and open minecraft game and click multiplayer it will ask for an ip address...
9.  to obtain your server ip for you mac(not sure if older models can do this to what i have seen) but click your apple at the VERY top left and click system preferences
10. once open hit network in the internet and network section
11.  highlight where you get your internet and click the advanced button in the bottom right
12. thru the tabs at the top go to TCP/IP and it should show some numbers in sequence with periods.  your IPv4 address is what you need so right that down(this changes, or atleast on mine, so always check before you sign into your server for the ip) the ip should look like 000.000.0.00 with numbers not 0's
13. once you obtain this go to the file that popped up from terminal and find a sentence that says starting minecraft server on *:somenumbers, mine for instance is 25565.  this number is necessary to log into your server
14. now that you have your ip and your port number(that 5 number in step 13) go to minecraft multiplayer and type in your ip with the periods just like it is. after you type that in hit  : on your keyboard then type in your port number, should look something like this 171.124.0.12:22565( not an ip dont try)
14. if all done correctly it should log you in and be able to play
i hope this helped anyone out for i just posted it for the people who were in the situation i was in...and for inviting your friends have them just type your ip in...you need to be online for this as i found out for it to work.
if you have any problems just respond to this post
