I stumbled across some idea's while building a representation of our very own solar system. I was wondering; Why not actually be able to travel to the moon? Perhaps to get there you could be able to build a small space pod, or ship using a lava bucket with iron to make "fine metal". And like the portals-instead of building it on a crafting table- you would just set it up on the ground and when all the components are added correctly you could get in, and potentially fly to the moon.
This possibility sprouts many new items as well. For instance; a spacesuit. The helmet could be made out of glass and wool perhaps, maybe leather. The rest of the suit could be made out of wool/leather as well.
Perhaps to make the moon more interesting there could be a new mob that spawns up there. Aliens for example might be a good alternative mob for the new area. They could be more advanced, perhaps supplying us with electricity based items that we could power up to use various things. Light bulbs could be made from glass, and if there was wire on the moon in one of the alien caves (or buildings) then light bulbs could be a true possibility. Even redstone could work.
Moon rock could be a new block either just for looks or other purposes (please give ideas on this if anyone has any)
Gravity would be less allowing for new archetecture design due to the increased jumping heigth. Stairs could be taller, buildings in general could be larger.
Pipes could be a possibility (combine fine metal previously mentioned with sticks) so that air could be pumped into a player made house disreguarding the need for the spacesuit all the time.
