OK first off i know a lot of you guys will flame me for this, but i downloaded Minecraft for free off mega downloads. At first glance I was skeptical, thinking it would just be a virus or something. yet when i opened it, I was able to play. So to get used tot he game i felt it would be best to play a bit of single player. I opened up single player and it worked perfectly fine (saved my game and everything). After that nI felt like i wanted to play some multiplayer so I went to the title page and opened it up. I immediately saw the IP address and knew i had to start searching for servers, so i went online to various forums and youtube videos picking out the most up to date sources.

When i finally found one i liked i began to put it in as follows 174.49.219.186:25565
I clicked to connect and i just keep getting this message (note i tried about 5-6 other IP's aswell). My gut feeling is that because i downloaded it off a website it is being all mashed up with other files or something. i really want to play some mine craft cause its the only game one of my friends is allowed to put on his new computer for some reason T.T.

I would really enjoy some help please.
