Small Private Server

Maybe I've missed it, but I can't find a post/guide about a small private server (only large ones)
My friends and I want to create a place where we can all play survival mode together (there will be 3 to 4 of us total).
I am sure I can figure it out through the other larger guides but I have a couple questions about the requirements how it works:
1) We don't want to pay for hosting. so I assume I can host from my computer, right?
2) If I host from my computer, will they be able to play if I'm not on
3) What will hosting do to my internet/computer speed?
4) Any other suggestions to play with a few friends in survival?
