Very recently, prices dropped for redstone and lapis. Although I do agree that both of them needed a price reduction, the price has been lowered to the point where it isn't profitable to mine. I think that some better prices woudl be $4 for redstone and $5 for lapis. This would make it worth everyone's time to pick these up while mining, while still keeping people from getting rich quickly by mining.
As well as that, I love the idea of a /buy command. I think it would be great if a few blocks and items that are on the easier side as far as obtaining them could be bought. I know that it would affect the economy, so I think it would be best to keep this to things like dirt, stone, wood, iron, etc. The effect on server economy could also be made less dramatic with having relatively high prices for these items. My suggestion would be prices like $1.5 per block of dirt, and $3 per block of smooth stone. Keeping prices within 1.5-3 times the server /sell price would keep a nice balanced price, so it is affordable but not cheap.
Let me know what you think about my suggestions please, but keep in mind that these are just concepts and in no way are they my expectations.
A valid concern and suggestion, however:
This time around we really aimed to have a player controlled economy with the market place and player shops. We purposely made the /sell prices really low to discourage people from selling to the server and giving the market place/player shops a go.
Sadly, a /buy command would go against the above so sadly, it wont be implemented.
Thanks for your suggestion regardless!
I understand not having a /buy command, but I feel very strongly that it will be extremely difficult to have a player based economy if there is no influx of money at all. This will likely result in the economy going back to trades and such. I think prices should be increased at least a bit, as to let the economy remain somewhat stable and let people purchase warps for towns and public services. As the server prices are now, the only thing I think I'll be selling to anyone or anything is gold, and that is in my opinion pathetic.
I agree with ArrowJohn. >.>
@Cookie: The economy has slowly gained traction since we opened early access. The top balances can pay for a lot of warps etc. It's just more time = more reward.
Here's the thing... a lot of people complained last time because money was way to accessible. Now it isn't accessible enough? The server prices are there to get people rolling but should not be the first method you think of to make money.
We are looking into other ways for players to get money rather then just farming for it (literally). Jobs is on the table but requires some time to balance.
just be glad that the prices are anything but 0 and there is even a sell command. I personally could survive with no selling to the server as I am currently making a shop that sells everything I come across while mining and have a stall at /warp market. I suggest you do the same. Sell dirt, cobble and seeds and whatever else.
No one will buy not even 2X that price. Who came up with this idea really discourages shop selling. THINK AGAIN.
Have a nice one.
I really doubt it.
Emerald suffered the most, with only 5$ you would rather keep it for yourself. Diamond, however, is just 30$. At least have the decency to make emerald 50$, which is the most rare crystal.
if no one buys even double the sell price then explain how come people have been buying items at my shop stall and from the global market. when sell goes away and at the decreasing rate of prices it is likely, the market and chest shops will be the only way to make money off items. Either jump on the band wagon and start a chest shop or be left behind.
@quake:Jobs IS on the table. We have been exploring it for some time now.
Nich answered most of the other stuff.
The syetem works.
Emeralds can also be obtained through villager trading and therefore effectively farmed. Renewable resources are worth less because they're easier to get. The system where non-renewables are worth more makes exploration more of a priority than just sitting at base farming, too.
Redstone in particular is such a usful building material that it should sell well to other players...
Well on the idea of things players can do other then selling things would be making HG/SG winners earn money for winning, but that would be only when said number of players are playing the game this way [me and a few friends can't just grind money] but would make HG/SG more intresting.
Another idea I had was even tho selling was a no go, I thought the selling of things like WitherSkulls would be something good, since there is no use for them since you can't summon a wither anyway why not allow players to sell them? [Just a thought]
As an alternitive to earn money on the server, hub prizes for winning and participating could be something like $100, this would increase the amount of people using the hub and more people wanting to try out new things on the server
People complain when the prices are too high and too many rich people exist, so then we make the economy as such that it doesn't allow an avenue for that and people complain.
I will explain my understanding here. You like when it was easy to make money on the server so you could sit on a high balance and do nothing...just sit there with a high balance and the pride behind it. Then we nerf it so that won't happen, and of course you complain because you can't have these God awfully high balances. All I'm seeing here are complaints that things are "too hard". Things aren't "too hard", they are just hard. So, instead of plopping on the ground and complaining about it, go out and work harder. Play the actual game.
The way i see it is that in regular survival minecraft you can't /sell hand to get new items for your junk. Money on the server i s basicly (in my opinion) a away of safe trade, same as market and chestshop.
Plus if all the /sell prices were high, no one would use market na d chestshop. So there would be no point to using them, no point to makeing a shop and no point selling market items.
As it is now, you should try to use market to sell items to make money. Or make an attention grabbing shop at spawn for poeple to buy from.
After the horrible experience of my shops and staff I no longer want to know anything about it anymore.
So now I get to enjoy playing as a bum in the "Great Depression" making do with whatever I have or find.
No really, it is fun being a ragpicker, farm your own food, chop ya wood and get out there and mine for that fancy rock. I hardly sell or but anything now a days. Only just enough to buy some land for farming and that just about it. Try it, it a real challenge having to not rely on shops so much. I chopped a lot of wood to buy some land and to get some of the basics and wear ragged armor.
We all use to enjoy being rich, now lets all enjoy being a bums.
I personally like to mine and just play the game. But once you have everything you want it's hard to spend money too. Snowball and myself help on several warp for people and I like buying wither heads, but besides that what kind I buy? I feel like items that u can't make or buy should be in the market for higher prices. If I could buy zombie, Skelton, creeper heads and beacons I would be probably broke. But when u have like 40 diamond and 40 gold horse armor there's really noting else to buy. So I mine make money than have nothing to spend it on. Guess just make random warps everywhere.
Well another comment from me... :D @Spud redstone is a very useful material, no will will be it thought because its really easy to find. @Bunny you can buy can buy stuff like god armour/tools and such, things you like. As I said before I think the prices are to low, all the people that complain are rich people are gone or still broke because they don't work hard enough for their money...
I dont know about any one else that has a high balance but im not sitting around doing nuttin, we are building a town, making grinders, helping random people with warps, and im always getting materials for SMP players. I would like to see a staff shop with items from creative mode, I probably wouldnt have any money left.
its easy to make money on the server even without the prices be high. If people mined they can make money too, I personally love to mine and travel...
no matter what the staff does their are always gonna be people that will complain about it. They can never make everyone happy.
Im not saying that cause I have a high balance.. if I was being greedy I wouldnt have helped people with warps, just would have kept all of it
I love SMP player shops just wish there was more of them..
Just be greatful the staff didnt remove the sell command in general and just make everything about trading for items.
diodes are still worth $30, you might want to put that down to $5 or something
See, that's all it takes is hard work and initiative like snowball here...
When I will get enought money I'll help with the warps, help everyone in their needs almost always, building my Vault Museum project. I was constantly helping users before my Vault Museum project came on my mind, and made a hobby for mining extensively.
I'll buy a shop at /warp market... once its properly lit so I can go there at night without dying. Seriously, is there an above ground mob spawner there?! It's ridiculous how many mobs are there...

I agree with your idea but I really dislike the fact that we can't get rich quickly. I remember when I used to have $5 million (richest player on server to this date) and everyone else also used to be rich. It would be easy to get things for everyone and very easy to sell them more high price because everyone had a lot of money. Now it seems a lot harder to get the good things everyone goes after because no one is that rich. But I still agree with your idea of the /buy command and the prices for redstone and lapis to be increased.
