Hello fellow World of Minecraft Forum Users
After watching a lot of Minecraft videos from a lot of different content creators, as well as seeing people request for a tutorial on how to record Minecraft, I decided I would write one up, to answer those requests as well as show some new potential Minecraft content creators a good way to record Minecraft with brilliant Video and Audio quality!
With this guide I will show you what software to use for recording, how to use video editing software (focussed on Sony vegas) and the best settings for high quality videos without hindering PC performance, resulting in high quality videos with no lag, FPS stutter, audio or video loss and no video distortion.
Let's get started!
The Software You Will Need
OBS "Open Broadcast Software"
This is hands down THE best recording software I have ever used! And I have used Fraps, Xsplit,DXtory and many others for my videos in the past. OBS no only creates normal sized files, but it also outputs directly into MP4 format, some may argue AVI format is a lot better, but generally speaking I do not notice the quality difference that much at all and just to note Fraps outputs to AVI and the file size for a 5 minute video is anyway from 5-16GB, or higher! Meanwhile OBS's MP4 file size for a 10 minute video is 150MB! And the quality difference is barely noticeable!
Sony Vegas:
I have used Windows Movie Maker, and other "free" video editing softwares, but they are not as good nor as powerful as Sony Vegas. The other video editing software I used is Adobe After Effects, but I only use Adobe for serious editing as you can create some awesome effects and have the tools for tons of other awesome features. Sony Vegas is and will probably always will be my go to video editing software, it's user friendly, easy and simple to use, and you can do some great stuff with Vegas and it is always getting new and innovative features making it even better! Also it's not too pricey as you can get the latest Vegas consumer software for around $400 for the full package, not a bad deal!
Recording:
Once you have OBS installed, open up the 32 bit / 64 bit version, depending on your Operating System. Depending on how you have minecraft (Windowed Mode / Fullscreen Mode) Right click in the ""Scenes* box and click "Add New Scene" then right click in the "Sources" box and click"Window Capture" (If you have Minecraft in windowed mode) or click "Game Capture" (If you have Minecraft in Fullscreen mode) once that is done, you can click preview stream and check that Minecraft is showing up on OBS, if you see a blank black box in OBS, leave preview steam on and tab to Minecraft, click inside the game anywhere, then tab back to OBS and you should see the picture, and then you are golden! If Minecraft doesn't look fullscreen in OBS simply left click on Window / Game Capture and then click "Edit Scene" on the right hand side, then drag the edges of the red box to each corner, this will then make it fullscreen.
Video Editing & Recording Settings:
I will not go into super detail about the settings otherwise it would make this post needlessly long, all you need to know is that I spent a very long time researching and trying new settings to get the settings I use today, and they really are the best settings to record with, you will get great 720p HD videos with great video quality, minimal file size and will also have 0 performance issues whilst recording, OBS is not a resource hog like Fraps and Xsplit so you will get no lag whilst recording. You will get great audio quality HOWEVER I cannot comment on your microphones audio quality because you may have a not so great Microphone, so I am unable to help there. The Microphone I use in my videos is a Blue Yeti with a pop filter attached to it, it's a great microphone and produces great mic audio quality.
