when I go digging in random holes sometimes I hear weird music. any ideas what it may be and how far away is it.

The Noises...
Those noises (in my opinion) are to scare the player and give a little rush to you.
it wont hurt you, its just ambience.

Ambience is just something added to the game to as DVerbi said give the player a rush. I do agree it is quite scary when you first start playing, but you get used to it. Don't worry.
