Moderator Guide
Mods
Congrats on your new promotion! Or, if you're being forced to read this again because you got demoted, read carefully. We're going to go over your responsibilites and clear up any confusion about your commands.
Lesson 1: New registrations
So a guest just came in and asks you how to become a member. What do you do? Tell them to type /upgrade and /policy in a polite manner. Always keep your cool and never ignore a player. Note: You don't have to tell guests to type upgrade/policy. The server will tell them periodically. Don't harass our guests. Now they tell you they just registered. What do you do now?
/search [their_full_username]
This will search the website for any new accounts under that name. If their name does not show up, they probably did not activate the account in their e-mail. Give them a friendly reminder to check it again. We HAVE had problems with the activation e-mails going out in the past, so be aware of that.
Sometimes they register under a different in-game name, always ask them about this if they don't show up. The /search command is not 100% reliable. Every once in a while a name will not show up in there. If the user insists he did activate, and you can't find him, go onto the website and do a manual search.
You're not done yet! Always check and see if they have any notes! Use this command:
/status [their_full_username]
This command will show all their promotions, demotions, silences, mutes, notes, etc. This is really important. If they have any notes along the lines of "never make this person a member", don't member and find a higher up. NEVER make a spectator a member. We'll go over handling spectators later.
Lesson 2: How to check for grief
Be sure to frequently check the guest zone for grief. Sometimes the grief is obvious, a destroyed building, sometimes its tunneling underground. Be sure to inspect it thoroughly.
If the grief is blatantly grief, spectate them. If the grief seems more like an accident or simply ignorance, /warn the user and explain to him what he did wrong.
Go easy on light tunneling and random holes. Instead of spectating for it, you should talk to the user and ask him to fix it. If they do not respond, then spectate and undo them. If what they did was not spec-worthy, just note their status about what they did.
ALWAYS be 100% sure that they are the ones responsible for grief. For this, you use:
/whodid
After typing that, you click on a block (or where a block was) and it will give you the history of who changed that block. There's more to the syntax you can add though
/whodid name - Shows all of the users actions/whodid more - Shows a longer history/whodid all - Shows ALL of the history
Not all of these are available to mods, but they're good to know.
Lesson 3: Types of griefing, and how to handle them
- Light Tunneling / Light Random Holes - Talk to the user and ask him to fix it. Note them after talking. If they don't/refuse to fix it, spectate and undo.
- Heavy Tunneling / Heavy Random Holes - Spectate and undo
- Griefing - Spectate and undo.
- Building a Swastika/Penis/Offensive thing - Spectate and undo. If they bring up the "Hindu swastika" thing, tell them it is NOT up for debate and if it continues, mutes and silences may be handed out.
Lesson 4: Chat Rules + Names
The server has an autofilter that will change all swears into "beep". If you find users bypassing this by saying things like "fu.ck" or something similar, mute and warn them. If they do it again, silence them. There are other ways they can abuse the chat though, like flooding.
Here's an example of flooding:
User: The quick brownUser: fox jumpsUser: over theUser: lazy brownUser: dog.
Spamming is repeating something over and over. Example:
User: wtfUser: wtfUser: wtfUser: wtf
Allcaps is basically what it sounds like, someone speaking in all caps. Be lenient on this, it's not the worst of offenses. If it gets out of hand though, mute and warn 2-3 times, then silence if they do it a 4th time.
1st Offense: Give them a warning2nd Offense: Mute them, then warn them.3rd Offense: Mute and warn one last time. Explain that next time it will be a silence4th Offense: Silence them.
If a user comes in with an inappropriate name, explain to them that they need to come back with a different name and ask them to leave. If they don't leave you should kick them. If they keep coming back, find an admin who will then ban them. Offensive skins also adhere to these rules.
Lesson 5: Answering Questions, Spec appeals and Probationees.
Always be sure to answer questions from our guests in a friendly manner! If a spectator comes in it is absolutely VITAL that you stay friendly and helpful to them. Yes, as much as it may suck, you still have to be nice.
If a spectator asks how to become a member or appeal, tell them to type "/appeal". This should give them all the info about appealing. At this point, their spectator appeal will be handled by an executive.
If their appeal is approved, they will go on probation for a set amount of time. As a probationee, they can only build in the guest area. Probationees will have a green name with a pink # next to it. If they mess up in the slightest during this period, spectate them. Don't ever take a probationee of probation early. If they ask how much time they have left, status them, it will tell you.
Lesson 6: Commands
/spec - There's a very specific syntax for using this command. Always follow it, it makes it easier for our executives to handle appeals.
/spec [name] [reason]
For the reason, we ask that you put it in this format:
Reason (keep it simple) / Area (guest/member area/etc.) / Server
After you do this, do a /note with a better description of what they did. Be specific!
/undo - This should be used for undoing grief. This command is NOT to be played with, under any circumstances. If you are not sure about undoing someone, use:
/undo NAME preview
This will give you a preview about what you will be undoing. If the grief does not disappear, then that person is not responsible and/or the logs have been cleared. To exit the undo preview, type:
/monitor reset
/monitor - There are two options for /monitor, "noground" and "blank. No ground will remove most of the maps ground, leaving just the players buildings. Blank will remove EVERYTHING from your screen. One cool trick with monitor is going into noground, then doing an undo preview of a user. This will leave you with everything removed besides that players grief/buildings.
/rollback - Use this to /rollback a fill or an /undo. NEVER /replay an undo unless absolutely necessary. Rollback will only undo your last big move (fill or undo).
/replay - This command should only be used as a last resort. It will redo all of the users actions (even deletes and placements).
For further information, check out the commands list. If you're ever unsure about using a command, double check with a higher up.
Lesson 7: IRC
Go take a look at the IRC guide. All World of Minecraft staff members are required to use irc.
