1.3_01 update causing computer to crash

Since updating to 1.3, and then to 1.3_01, minecraft has become unplayable due to crashing withen 1 minute of opening any world. First there will be graphics glitchs, where random colord lines, boxes, or other things appear in the game, some of them dissapear when I move around, others are permanant. After a few seconds the lighting will start to glitch, and almost instantly after that the game freezes, the sound distorts and buzzes, and my computer stops responding completely. Before the update I have run the game on fancy and far (max graphics) and it has never crashed or had any errors while playing.
Turning off the new high quality shadows and setting the graphics to low has no effect.[*]
I have tried deleting the .mincraft folder, re-downloading the game, as well as running in compatibility mode.
I have also updated java and my graphics card drivers to the latest versions.
I do not think this is due to a poor graphics card or ram, as I have a nVidia GTX 260 and 4Gb ram, which runs every game on high quality graphics settings.
Is there a fix for this?

This hasn't seemed to be the problem as it crashes on every view distance, and before the update I ran the game on 'far' without ever having trouble.

This is also my problem.
Before the update i could also run on far and fancy but now the game constantly crashes, this never happened before the update. I don't get those colored lines but the game will just freeze and i have no other choice but to exit the game. It also take about 10 min to load a not-so-big world.

play in the browser? I cant figure out how this happened, but maybe that will work? That is all I can really suggest.

One thing that always crashes my game is when I set the distance to "Far". It plays normally for 10 minutes and then crashes. Maybe thats the problem?
