1st timer trying to make sense with this mess of options that dont work

so i just downloaded the World of Minecraft, installed the "minecraft.jar" file and now im kinda here like, "wtf"?
the options when i open "World of Minecraft.exe" are : "sign in!", "single player", and "go" and of these three options only single player does something. from there there's a few issues, i dont want to play by myself and I was to do survival mode not creative mode or whatever.
just so you know when i do click the "sign in!" button i get an error 503... i thought i read on here that the way this worked minecraft.net didnt have to be up and running for the servers to load. is that only if i have a cache? which i dont have...
anyway this is sh*t and im kinda annoyed; anyone have a solution?

A "Bookmark URL" is u know... like a bookmark for your browser
so its saying if you have the link to this server enter it.
Apparently all I have is a chached version and it still wont work.
