getting this message: "401 The web site is blocked by administrator." I
asked my brother if he had blocked any sites since he is has control
over the router (sigh). I didn't get a definitive answer. i tried going
on minecraft.net on the other computers at my house and i get the same
error. I'm not sure if the site for some reason was blocked by the
router/firewall or i was banned. I used my school computer to go on the
website and its fine. now when i start the World of Minecraft client it says "could not
retrieve server list. Going single-player" (something along those
lines).
Does anyone know how to fix these problems? i would greatly appreciate anyone who answers.
BTW i have windows vista.

im pretty sure he didnt. i tried going on the website on his computer and it gives me the same error. im pretty sure he wouldnt block himself.

We have had a very similar problem. In our case it stemmed from the removal of the search engine qword, which also attaches itself to versalsoft and nbget internet downloads. We eventually got rid of qword but it seems to have infiltrated the router as it's last aggressive act and somehow barred minecraft from being recognised in any command line. The answer for us has been to go into minecraft using the IP address which is 184.73.219.67. Just type this into your browser and it should work. Best of luck.

Seems like your brother has blocked minecraft.net. Talk to him about it.
