Accessing a private hamachi server?

Hello, I've used the search and have found nothing on this subject.
I want to know if it's possible to access my friends private hamachi server using the World of Minecraft client.
I have tried using his hamachi ip as the url, and a URL he gave me from external_url.txt
In both cases it times out.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, you need to elaborate your question, is it an SMP server or a classic server?
