A perk that comes with working in the travel industry is, you'll always find new and interesting things to check out!

This is an airport in Madeira, Portugal. It looks like a simple freeway, but upon closer inspection, the "freeway" turns out to be the runway, and the ground below is the PARKING LOT. The runway is of powerful design and can accommodate 747's.

I have not researched this yet, but airports with this kind of design may drastically affect the economy of smaller islands, i.e. Guam, etc. Imagine shipments and business being done with larger planes via space-saving airports! =D
