Beta and paying for updates?

Someone told me if you bought Minecraft AFTER the Alpha (During the Beta) you have to pay for the updates (like that new one with dynamic lighting), is that true? Because I'm planning to buy MC.

My understanding goes as follows:
ALPHA BUYERS - full game (all updates) is free, includes any possible 'expansion pack'-type addons for free as well - this deal is no longer available, for obvious reasons
BETA (and later, presumably) BUYERS - full game (all updates) is free, expansion pack addons cost additional moneys
So whoever said that was lying, unless he grievously misunderstood what counts as an expansion pack.

Where does he get that information from.
I never read anything about it on the website, updates for minecraft are free.
However, minecraft will cost more with every new version, alpha it was 10 euros, beta 14.95 and so on.
