Cannot open downloaded file

Have bought then downloaded and saved the Minecraft.exe , but when I go to open it it say that it is an unrecognizable file type. I have newest version of Java and have XP service pack 3. What do I do now?

When downloading the file,
When downloading the file, not after its already downloaded, rename it to minecraft.exe. see if that works.

Rename the file .exe, I had to do so and I'm running XP too.
