When I run the Alpha .exe on my main computer, the sound is defaulted to off, and whenever I click the button to change it, the program abruptly shuts down. I'm running on Windows Vista 64-bit with an intel Q6700 procassor, discreet nvidia graphics, integrated sound, 4GB RAM, and service pack 1. Java is fully updated. Does anybody else have this problem and/or know how to fix it?
Yes, my sound is definitely on, but thanks for the suggestion ;)
No problem, my pleasure :)
Hopefully some simple software updates are all it takes to fix things, fingers crossed.
Please let us know how you get on.
Anyone got any idea for this? same thing happens for me, go to turn on sound/music and minecraft closes?
Myself and my 2 sons both play. My oldest son has tried to play on his desk top pc which has XP pro and no sound, when going into options both the sound and music say off, but when he clicks on them World of Minecraft shuts down. The same thing happens on his laptop which has Vista. I tried running it in compatibility mode on just about every version of windows but still same problem. Any ideas or solutions? My other son has xp and no problems, I have Windows 7 and no problems.
I also uninstalled Java and reinstalled it, I deleted all World of Minecraft except the saves file. Still no sound.
Hey WoMMers,
This is just a thought but it could be something to do with the way Notch is changing the system for how sounds work.
Referring to this topic: http://www.worldofminecraft.com/node/9216 "No sound? Problem Solved"
You may possibly need to download the soundpack (again, maybe).
Once again, not a guarenteed fix but it's worth a try.
Hope this helps (:

Edit: Double post fail.
I also think this is the correct solution to the problem.
The issue was Notch stopped the client from downloading sounds and music if you downloaded the client when the servers were dying because of the amount or resources that were used on the server were causing it do die or slow down considerably.
Recently, he's enabled sounds and music again, but if you downloaded the client when he stopped users from being able do download the sounds/music with the client, they won't exist which makes the client crash due to missing resources.
To fix it, redownload the client now or use the link posted above to download the files seperately.
Hope this helps!

The resource file is fine, it has all the sound data, it is only when you click on the slider to turn the sound or music from off to on that it will cause the Minecraft window to close. I've tried everything I can think of, even installed the same version of java that I have on my Windows 7, which is 6 update 14 (yes I know should be updated.) and it still won't work.
Hey, I had the same problem as you and here’s how I fixed mine.
1. Go to “C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\.minecraft\bin\natives”
2. Create a new folder. (I called mine “not used”)
3. Move the “OpenAL32.dll” and the “OpenAL64.dll” into the new folder
4. Reopen Minecraft
If that doesn’t work you may need to download/install the OpenAL from http://windows7themes.net/download2/oalinst.zip
Hope this helps =D
The sound has worked fine 4 me! 8D

Silly question to start with, but you're sure the sound is not muted on your Vista PC?
If not then my first thoughts are it could be a driver issue, and as
such I'd suggest you could try browsing the support section on the
Intel website for up-to-date drivers for your integrated sound card.
Beyond that you could check Windows Update to see if there are any optional hardware driver updates available on there.
I guess another possibility would be Java, you could try uninstalling
it and installing the latest version of Java for WinVista x64.
