i want to connect to a friend's server (SMP, Alpha) with the World of Minecraft custom client.

how can i do that? i tried to connect via ip but that doesn't work.
how do i find out the url of that server? what i need is

http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=THIS URL PART

i don't know what to do :(
