Can't run Minecraft.exe on my desktop

I can play Minecraft in the browser, but I want to play it on my desktop, fullscreen.
But this is the problem:
I start up Minecraft.exe, the login screen comes up, I type in my username and password. I hit login, and then it just stops, nothing happens. the game freezes on the login screen.
It works on my laptop, but I want it to work on my desktop computer.

specs would help.
I think that you should (if windows) CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up task manager, then click on processes and find javaw.exe. Right click on it and set priority to high, Do this all before you login but after you start the game.
