are you talking about minecraft the game beta? I didn't buy it and i still changed my single player skin...

you go to www.minecraft.net(AFTER you bought the game) then go into your profile, Skins, Choose upload chosen skin...and presto ur skin is changed in both : single player AND muiltiplayer(including World of Minecraft realms!) try it i've never bought the game so there is still a chance it might not work :_ ....

you need to put it in the minecraft.jar in beta:
windows start>seatch>minecraft open FOLDER>bin>minecraft.jar>open with winrar>you are now in the textures of the game>seatch for the basic skin it must be in there i think.
you can edit skins with mc paint or skinEDIT. or paintbrush on the mac. if you want to heve a skin basic:seartch on the skindex.

yes. thats true. but you can play with a skin in the (ilagal) downloaded version to a file, idono whitch one.
you can download skinedit alpha. if you dont want, go to the skindex
( www.minecraftskins.com ) to download a basic skin. then you can edit it with microsoft paint or on the mac painbrush.
(on my computter skinEDIT doesnt work cus its a mac)
