Chat function does not work + cannot connect to servers.

Whenever I go to play Minecraft on either Mac OS X 10.5.8 or Windows Vista, pressing T does not allow me to chat, so this means I can't join rooms.
I've also noticed that I can't join any servers. I get no error, but I load the game and I end up on a default generated level.
Any ideas?

You don't join rooms by using chat. Chat is disabled in single player. Double check your password and username are right, as this is the cause of no server list 99% of the time.
