I put the jar file in the lib folder, and double clicked run.bat and when the screen pops up, it closes immediately. I use Windows XP if that matters.

Anyways, it means exactly what it says.
What OS are you running?
And just in case you're not good with computers, OS means operating system. Like Vista, XP, Windows 7, etc.
It means that it doesn't know what command "java" is.
And that's exactly what it said.
Besides that, you might as well post a topic in the "Introduce Yourself" section.

I'm having the same problem as he is, and I tried that whole "pause" thing. Here's what the first bit of the error report says.

Minecraft itself works fine on the official site, but using the custom client causes this to happen.

I have the newest version of Java, placed the file into the lib folder, extracted the files, and it still will not run. Also the videos do not work.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit and the Run .bat closes instantly.
First, i tried the java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar
that never worked
then %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Java\jre6\bin\java

that didnt work.
set up enviromental variable? done. didn't work
