Just wanted to ask a few noob type questions, I will prob be flamed for asking these but here goes.
1. I have only ever played on friends servers, so never came accross the conceapt of money or currency, am I right I start and gain by just simple mining etc?
2. On the smp server is there a beginners town, so I can get used to playing on a server of this size?
3. I am fairly able as far as building goes, is there a post which covers basic rules, type of building allowed, for example if you have tekkit what is allowed/not allowed etc. My last hated energy condensers etc.
Again sorry if these make me sound like a total beginner, Im not just never played on a wide used public server before.

niels covered all your questions pretty much so i just wanted to add to number 3. Build anything you can tink of. I've built naval destroyers, space ships, submarines and skyscrapers. Just go all out and build whatever you can dream up. hope to see you on the server soon.

1. Selling things is the way to start getting your first pennies. Selling your junk instead of throwing it away gives some money too
2. There's a road from spawn leading to a town which has quite some people in it. I don't think there's a plot left though
3. We don't have a tekkit server, so anything that doesn't offend others (Swastika, etc) is perfectly fine
