Connecting to a server using IP & Port (LOCKED)

I'm trying to connect to my friends server using the IP and port... However it seems that that World of Minecraft client doesn't recognize the type of URL I'm trying to enter in.. It looks like all the server listings are using a "http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server= string" to connect..
I've tried putting in the server address using <ip address>:<port> method but that doesn't work.
The server he has is private and is not listed online.. What would be the proper way for me to enter in the IP and port number in the URL box?

The problem and (maybe) the solution
This is a very annoying bug, and the reason that it wont work is World of Minecraft reads the play.jsp file, and in that file stands the session id, if it is bought, and the username. but in the file is also a thing that says the ip of the server, so if you make a dns file that serves your own minecraft.net file, then you could connect to ip :D
