Hey guys,
I was looking to get some feedback on this.
Im thinking about making a server with the sole purpose of using offering it as a space for map makers to collaborate with other map makers.
Basically the idea is that map makers would split the cost of running the server between several map makers.
So, instead of paying to run and then setup your own server for a month or 2.. you would just pay my a small fee to HOST your map.
when your done, we would email the map to you to do with as you please, and at that point.. delete it from the server.
We would use multiworld, and PEX to offer some minor perks like..
tpa, or sethome. your world would be password protected with a speacile redstone machine I've made in game. So, unless someone KNOWS the password to warp to your world, they wont be able to get there.
you could then, give that password out to friends and map makers that you want to come help you.
Plus, im testing out and using a plugin that would allow mapmakers to use command blocks without being in OP status.
though, im not sure if I would charge a small bit extra for that to cut down on possible greif issues.
I would also world edit,
and eventually,... maybe a public world where anyone could go to get some copy and paste buildings, redstone devices, games, props, various other to copy and paste to there map.
I dunno, just a thought. DO ya'll think that's something that map makers would want to have as an offer?
Also, spongepowered(the old bukkit) team is planning to release a server API soon for 1.8. meaning, I could create a 1.8 server with the same plugins for map makers to create worlds in 1.8 together.
Im still working out cost details.
Im thinking, there would be an initial BASE cost that would cover the time and work needed to add the map to the server, and then to setup the password encryption system.
then.. a very small monthly fee for parking it on the server.
In this way.. the map makers could focus on working and editing there map with friends. rather than messing with setting up a server.
Just wondering what everyones thoughts area.
I have a few people that are interested in the idea. But, I'd like to know theres more intrest out there than just 5 or 6 people before I go forward with everything.
Also if someone is serious enough about making their own map in detail, they'd invest the money into making their own server where they have full control over what goes on.
Brother, I'm gonna need evidence of these claims.
server costs can be expensive for some people.
the cheap servers, dont offer the flexibilty that a map maker needs to work on there map.
I've done the research..
ANY server host with prices under $10 dollars
dont allow access to server files. meaning,
its a plug and play server. you tell em teh plugins, and teh version.. and they do it for ya. but, you dont decide on the world.. you cant upload files to change the world,
you cant even cahnge the server options on many of them.
the best server hosts.. giving access to the files thru filezilla or something similar will run you 20-50 dollars per month.
Would you really want to pay $20 dollars jsut to upload a map for 2 weeks to work with some freinds to decorate, and tehn pull it down?
or would you rather pay $5 bucks to host it on a server already setup and ready and willing to give you the support if you dont known anyone to help with what your looking for?
Thats more what im looking to setup. If ya'll can get the nexus to offer that kinda of thing. i'll def start advertiseing to like crazy to my community and to others to help ya'll out when its made public.
Thats funny, i didnt even know. we came up with this idea on our community cause our custom mod pack server is pretty much dead.
Are your world sizes still limited?
are you going to be allowing map makers to UPLOAD here worlds to your nexus so they can get support on maps they already have worked on, or will they have to start fresh on the 300x300 world?
will allow people access to edit command blocks?
If so, that would be the key diffrence in our server setup,
we plan to work with each map maker on a per world basis. to help them with there needs.
rather they ahve a world they want to upload, or they have a custom world in mind, or the want to use our multiworld creation plugin to make a custom terrain world to start on.
plus.. what if they need help with interior decorations on a map they already have? or what if they have a map already made.. thats epic. and they have a story they want to merge into teh world, but they need help finishing the story, or doing command blocks?
Its good to know that others our wanting to do something like this too.
after doing the research, it seems like the only thing out there is hypixel and maybe.. sethblings server.
but, those arent really setup to support and help new map makers, or aspireing map makers... there setup to only support people that have proven themselves already in there click.
or to show off there worlds and contraptions.
I would def. like to keep up to date with the Nexus project.
who is heading it up?
is there a thread i can subscribe to to learn more?
If i can, i'd like to offer my support for your nexus server when its fully ready. i can def. advertise it on our community since its def. the kinda thing were looking for :)
NEXUS is based off a server we had back on classic called World of Minecraft:Realms
World Sizes: They are static for now. (We have a technical wizard looking into how we can make world sizes dynamic without much maintenance overhead)
User Uploads: No for now. (A low priority feature, we haven't looked into it)
Command blocks: No for now. (Out of the projects scope for initial release)
It's worth noting that NEXUS is still heavily in development however we have currently stopped working on it until sponge 1.8 is released.
Unlike your proposed server, we are building a feature set that a lot of people should find helpful and we hope to keep expanding and refining based on user feedback.
Myself and Spudsrus are both the active Devs on NEXUS but should you have questions, send them my way. Best way to reach me is via website PM here: https://www.worldofminecraft.com/messages/new/147545?destination=user%2F147545
To keep up with NEXUS keep an eye on the front page, we try to post new information and updates when we can.
def. once its ready for the public i'll give ya a hand in marketing it. Its sounds like an interesting concept. a bit better than the traditinal creative server setup.
I'd def. recommend to offer to upload maps for map makers.
on a per request basis.
the way i've got it setup is,
i can handle a total of 10 maps. i take any maps upload requests on a probono basis. IF i want to help the map maker, if i think the map is worth investing my staff and build communities time into, i'll load it up.
To skip the line, i would charge $5 for 1 month.
basiclly, that pretty much jumps there map to the front of the request and bypasses my staff's voteing on rather a map makers map should be uploaded or not.
Its pretty exciting. Im really looking forward to seeing what kind of adventures and stories come out of this collarberation with various map makers. :)
It's more then a concept, it works. Users have played on it and helped us test it (:
We'll have more news on it very soon, stay tuned!
i am tryin to understand what these seeds of minecraft are. went to mc-seeds.com and still dont understand
that website needs some work. but its a nice website to know. I'll post information about it on my forums too.
MCSEEDS is a 'coding' that 'germinates' the world when you first create it.
basically, gives your starting postion something new.
like, you spawn near a bunch of ravines...or lots of snow.
or crazy biomes, or lots of temples, or trees, or a slime chunks, or crazy unground caves.
"SEEDS" is kinda code for how your world generates the first time you create a world.

We already have a server in development similar to your concept.
