I am not a Minecraft player - I am posting here on behalf of my son.
I need to locate the Minecraft data files
I know that it is done by going to "Run" entering "%appdata%".... etc.....,
HOWEVER; I had to reinstall my OS (Windows Vista) last night.
I used another drive to re-install the system, so I have the former C drive with all the data on it available.
My son is going to reinstall Minecraft. He told me he backed up his data, but it may have been a while ago. Where/how can I find the saved data on the old drive and move it to the new?
Thaks for your help.
I have the C drive intact. I'm trying to find out where the data files are and if I can just copy them to the new drive once Minecraft is re-installed
On my computer i find my minecraft dir like so :
c:/user/AppData/Roaming/.Minecraft ( its the base folder)
the old games are in the saves folder , the old textures pack in texturespacks folder.
its in user\%appdata\roaming\.minecraft
It should be stored on the same harddrive Windows is on
Assuming i read the topic correctly, the backups for the data would be where ever they were backed up to.
Type %appdata% in the start menu. I dont use windows, but I know that works.
The minecraft data files can be located by going into the start menu, typing in %appdata% clicking on the folder roaming, then .minecraft. thats where everything is. You need to be an administrator on the computer or be on your sons profile (if he has one) to access these files.
when i need to get to the minecraft files i go to the texture pack selection in the game menu
it leads you to where your files are stored....
then again i'm an idiot and that may not help you at all.
My son, who can be a bit more emotional than others his age, was very upset this morning because he could not find his world. Is there anyway to tell if it has been deleted by a sibling? If it was deleted on the client are we totally out of luck, is there a compassionate backup plan? Is it possible that the game has just been renamed? I should mention that my children seem to have multiple worlds all named new world. I guess they are just getting the hang of actually naming their worlds, they are not the best typists. My son said he would know his world because it was named survival when he made it.
I goggled this topic and went to the saves folder on their computer. I tried going to properties but there was no selection for previous versions. I do not know what windows version is running on their computer, it is a few years old.
The good news is I got him on his way to school and he will probably be less volatile when he gets home. I know he should not have been playing a game before school, but that will wait until tomorrow to deal with.
Thank you for any suggestions.

To above. If the game got forcefully shut down (Alt + F4, Power shortage, etc) there's a chance that the world got corrupted. If it indeed got corrupted then you're out of luck
(Still not sure why Mojang didn't fix this yet)
Thank you. It is very possible that the computer was forced to shut down while the program was still running.
minecraftmom: There is a small chance that if for some reason it was deleted, I know sometimes I've seen the world.dat files go into the recycling bin (depending on how it was deleted/erased) You can check there, and if it is infact not in there, then you are out of luck on that one. Also, as for the naming it survival, I'd just have you log into each world with him, and see if he notices anything familiar in the surroundings/inventory. If you do seem to find his world by doing that, then just rename the world to something he'll remember.
As for elvee, your post is fairly old and I'm not sure if you are still looking for help/already figured it out or even moved on. But based on what I've read, I'll simply give the answer I have (which may be a slight restate of previous comments) but might help a bit better.
Step 1: on your previous backed up harddrive with all your old files, simply locate the .minecraft folder that is saved on that harddrive (aka if it's just plugged into another slot on the computer it would be like D:/(user)/appdata/roaming/.minecraft or whatever)
Step 2: simply find the "saves' folder inside your .minecraft (assuming when he said he "backed up" the worlds that he just saved them in the original area.)
Step 3: Just copy over the "saves" folder to your new harddrive in the same location in the new .minecraft folder (C:/user/appdata/roaming/.minecraft)
Step 4: Load up minecraft and make sure everything transferred correctly.
IF HE BACKED IT UP TO ANOTHER LOCATION!
Simply find the location, copy and paste into the new .minecraft folder on your new C drive.
Hope this info solved your basic needs. I will lock the thread so we don't get anymore random posts on here. Any other questions just please PM me and I will do my best to help.
Happy Holidays!!
