Using Windows XP , downloaded everything accordingly, placed minecraft.jar in Lib
Just need some help with this.

Are you using the alpha .jar? or are you using the jar that the readme told you to download?
If you are using the alpha jar, Go download the proper jar. If not, Then please consider the following.
Disable any strict anti virus. example, Eset nod32, etc.
Turn off "real-time protection". The name will differ from AV to AV.. so im not quite sure what Anti virus you are using.
If that doesn't work, add an exception to your computer's firewall.
AND to your anti-virus's firewall.
And Oh, forgot to mention this earlier, Make sure you have the Latest JDK's. (java)
