I just got Minecraft today. Now thankfully, I haven't died since I've started building something. But I realized, I walked around for a LONG time before I found a perfect spot to start building my fortress, but I have no idea where I would spawn if I died. If I do die, how in the world am I going to find my building site?

I actually have a decent amount of items in a few chests in my little workshop outside my fortress haha. Thank you though, I was afraid that was the only solution. With just one torch I'd be able to see it from long distances?

The second option is to make a compass.
You'll need iron, and redstone dust
Redstone dust comes from redstone, found underground
Iron ingots are made from iron, get the iron block make a furnace and place the iron block NOT INGOT in the furnace.

Yeah I watched a bunch of tutorials, I just can't find redstone :( Haha. But I'm going to beacon up the area, kill myself, and try to find it before I build anymore, haha ^_^

If he/she makes a compass it only shows where ur spawn point is so how does that help?

You can find back to where you spawned and learn which way to go from the spawn point!!!

Yeah if I build the compass I can leave a trail of breadcrumbs back to my buildsite so to speak.

Yeah, the best way is to make a giant tower, or a walkway back to the spawn point to you're 'workshop' using the compass.

Barring that and choosing to commit suicide off a tall tower, go ahead and build a storage chest and place all of your belongings in it. To do that, first build a construction table by filling all 4 construction slots with blocks of planks. Place the the construction table on the ground then use it to build the storage chest. Place 8 blocks of planks in the 8 slots around the center. Place the chest on the ground then offload everything but the blocks you need for the tower.
Build the tower till you reach the game ceiling then take a leap!
What a pain! Compass is better. ;)

Ok, since you just started the game you probably don't have much items.
But that is ok, what you have to do is make a VERY tall tower with a torch on top. (the tower only is 1 block). If you die, get somewhere high and look for the tower.
