I've been having the same issues all of you have, here is what i did when i tried today.
1) i ran the run.bat file, this resulted in an error and a message came up saying, next time i run it will update...
2) i ran again, error main blah blah blah
3) i looked at my minecraft.jar file and saw that it was 0kb
4) i redownloaded the .jar file from here:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftDownload/classic/minecraft.jar
5) i copied this into my lib folder thus overwriting my 0kb file
6) reran run.bat and it worked!!

bump, cause people seem to think nobody is posting solutions... this worked for me, if it worked for you please say so this way we can at least keep a thread of working fixes.
