Freezing World of Minecraft client - now Java is broken (Mac OS) - Help!

I am running WoM Client 1.5.7 on Mac OS 10.5.8. Everything runs fine at first, but after 30 to 60 seconds the game freezes (red screen) and says:
Client Error - The game broke! [java.lang.NullPointerException]
I can now no longer open Java Preferences, as when I try it says:
Cannot launch Java application - A static initializer of the main class threw exception: java.lang.NullPointer Exception
I reinstalled Java over the top, but it still won't launch. This is annoying as I need to regularly delete the Java files to keep Minecraft running when occasional errors occur. As I cannot open Java Prefs, I can't get the version number, so checked on Apple, and found I am running the following:
Java SE 6 version 1.6.0_13
J2SE 5.0 version 1.5.0_19
J2SE 1.4.2 version 1.4.2_21
When the error occurs in World of Minecraft, this is what appears in the Terminal:

So my 2 problems are:
I can no longer open Java Preferences in order to delete / reset the necessary files.
WoM is freezing every 30 - 60 secs.
Any help would be massively appreciated.

try deleting anything and everything related to the hacks, except java and that fun stuff... just the hacks and try to redownload it again
