Griefing vs Wanton Destruction

I was just having a misunderstanding with someone over the internet. I know its hard to believe... I was just wondering: what is an invitation to build with another player? If a player asks you to teleport into an underground dungeon, is this invitation? Does that constitute permissions to build collaboratively? If you build a staircase out, is it griefing?

I thought maybe I could talk about this here.

If a player grants you permission to help and then doesn't like what you do, changes their mind, and/or calls a mod on you for griefing and you get demoted is this right? Is justice served?

I have been the victim of wanton destruction before and it hurts. If a player destroys everything you have created for the past hour, and you report them and they are demoted, is this justice?

Do you think these two scenarios should carry the equal punishment of automatic demotion, no questions asked,
based on the /whodid function? Or, is a warning more appropriate for one?

Also, Are you a moderator?

For Great Justice

When we see people building on top of someone else's work (which would be indicated by /whodid'ing the existing structure), we ask them if they've got permission to build there. I don't know that any of us spec on the spot for it (which would be Bad). Generally we make a note and tell them to knock it off if they aren't supposed to be building there (and undo, if feasible). And if they have permission, we move on.

When it comes to wanton destruction, we spec, pretty simple. One of the things I figured while I was a member was if you're clearing an area you should do it in an orderly fashion, not randomly click out blocks; that makes it look suspiciously like, well, randomly deleting blocks, which we frown upon.

One caveat with spectation for any of these offenses is you can appeal and get your build privileges back. We save life-without-parole spectation for only the most egregious offenders (multiple alternate accounts for evasion usually). Most importantly, it means if one thinks she were spectated in error, she can make her case in an appeal, we'll go "oh yeah you're right", set probation and we move on.

Permission to modify a build, though, is a bit finicky. Just asking someone to teleport doesn't necessarily constitute permission to modify; usually the guy just wants to strut his stuff (and rightly so, some awesome builders out there). If you're stuck down there, you should be pressing R to get back to your spawn point instead of modifying the build to escape. Again, we don't spectate on the spot unless there's a pattern of modifying builds or some form of grief-deleting going on.

We use a /warn temporary build lock, we say things in chat, we say red important things to everyone in chat, and we make notes. If someone modifying a build without permission chooses to ignore all those, that's when we drop the hammer and spectate.

Oh and yes, in case it weren't obvious, I'm in the admin rank.
