I tried to go on minecraft today and the news feed screen, the screen before you log on, said

Failed to update news
java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect

Also when i looked at \AppData\Roaming\.minecraft it said file empty, please can someone help or will i have to make a new account?

try this....

try going deleting your .minecraft folder, then go to minecraft.net and redownload it, that should sort out any problems

Sometimes that means...

Sometimes that's because Minecraft.net is down, but try what jak said.

...

Agaming.... reboot or restart your router, sounds like a dns issue.

Graylot.... are you using a mac? It does that from the web interface and sometimes from the clients.
