Wow!! Talk about the worst intro to Minecraft multiplayer ever!!!

I get into the game, starting in this cool little village which was all very nice to look at but all PRIVATE, so I couldn't do anything in town. So I decide to go searching for somewhere to start my own little place. I found a great little bend in a river surrounded by trees and decided to try to build an underwater base.
I built a tiny overland room in a hillside for my furnace and workbench and then went about digging out the area I wanted to build on in the riverbed. I had to keep remembering to come up for air of course which made working slow but I almost got there. On my last go I left it too late to come up for air and I drowned.
It wouldn't be a problem but the bloody game stuck me back in the starting village. I have absolutely no way of finding my way back to where I was building. It took me an hour to find it the first time around.
I spent over 2 hours building and now it is lost somewhere in the game world. What a complete waste of my time. This is just a quick shout out, does anyone know any way I can find where I was or is it simply a case of going out searching? If so then today is not only my first day in Minecraft but probably my last.

Some servers have a /sethome

Some servers have a /sethome and /home command that allows you to teleport to your set home, you should check and see if the server you are on has that function. Also, make sure you keep a note of where you are going/what direction your creation is in... I.E: North, south, east and west. If you have no way of telling, a dirt block can tell you. Dirt blocks have a white pixel to the edge that always points to the west, as seen in the following image.

Also, if you are able to set your spawn point to where your creation is, crafting a compass would be a good idea as it points to your spawn point.
