I want to play and build in survival mode. I am new to multiplayer and don't really know how it works.

how would I become a surveyor, and how do I get on World of Minecraft: Realms?

You play the classic server "World of Minecraft: Realms" And you type "/member [YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS]". Then you sign up at WoMRealms.com and enter the code that "/member" has provided, after signing in. Then you go back to the classic server, and build. Every 5 minutes after the hour, your "Rep Score" will update. When you reach a specific number, go to WoMRealms.com again, and click the "Edit" button next to your name. Finally, click "Upgrade" and as soon as you are the "Artist" Rank, you may be on the SMP server.

World of Minecraft:Realms is just a classic server enterable for basically everyone. Type there: /home. That's your private map. You get reputation points for building. If you have enouhg reputation points you can upgrade your rank. That's how you can become surveyor.
