Menu >>Multiplayer >> Add Server
When you have go this menu up type a name for the server you are joining and type the IP or connection address, For example, smp.womjr.com

i thought that you needed to use the World of Minecraft client for this, do i need a premium minecraft account for this?

Nope
The World of Minecraft client is for minecraft classic, not latest release minecraft.

thanks! i have been seeing if anybody else's problem was solved and you had the same problem as me!
So i checked this out and everybody gave me enough info that the answer was right under my nose!

if you mean go into multiplayer just click multiplayer then add server then type in the server ip aka adress
