i put the minecraft.jar into the lib folder and then clicked run.bat then a black box came up saying exactly this:

How to see how much RAM you have.
1. Click start and locate the My Computer icon.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and select Properties from the menu that appears.
3. Look
under the General tab where it gives you information about the size of
the hard drive and what operating system you use to find the amount of
RAM in megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB).
4.Minecraft can run with 1GB of RAM.
How to fix Minecraft to run with less RAM.
- Right click run.bat.
- Click edit.
- Press CTRL + F.
- Type in -Xms800M -Xmx800M.
- Once you find that line, change both the number to 500, or even less if that doesn't work.
- Go to File, then save the file.

3. At the bottom of the "Open" window, locate "Files of type".
4. Change "Files of type" to "All Files".
5. Locate and open run.bat.

I had the same error. I had more than enough ram, exactly 1.96 Gigs of it. And I had fixed it with the same thing, can someone please enlighten me of why 500 Megs only works and not 800 Megs with a 1.96 Gigs of ram computer?

This may be the result of a bug in Java. Try updating it. If that doesn't work you may want to try to actually increase the number to 1000. This will allocate more memory for Java.

You probably had many other applications open which caused you to have less than 800meg of ram free before you fired up the client.

I have 2 GB ram and I tried change it from 100M to 1000M but I still can't use it:(

Looks like some kind of memory allocation error, how much RAM do you have?
