It's simple I don't know what to do when I generate a map I don't know how to get tools or anything.
I have played Minecraft for a while but only just bought it.

It doesn't take long to learn trust me. To start off you can get logs from trees by breaking them. In your inventory (which has had the key remapped to i) you will have 4 blank boxes to the right of your picture. If you place logs in it you can change them to planks. 4 planks can make a workstation that has a 3x3 area for crafting. There are more recipies like sticks are 2 planks on top of each other. All the tools I can think of right now use sticks and a building material. Building materials are planks, cobblestone, refined iron, refined gold, and diamond. If you need help finding out more try the wiki. It has all the recipies.

How?

How do I get an axe to break the trees? Or is there another way to break them?

On a side, additive note...

You can now make other items, such as armour or decorations and such. Armour is made from cloth blocks, (gained from sheep) refined iron and gold, and diamond. Just place the blocks in how that piece of armour should look. There are, as of now, boots, pants, torso pieces, and helmets.
On a note of durability, it is the rate of which tools gather their respective resources and how often they break. It also applies to how much damage armour can take. The exact block ratings are on the wiki, but generally it goes
Weakest is wood and gold. Gold looks pretty, but should only be used for decoration, as it is just about as weak as wood.
Stone is next, and is good until you have a sizable base going.
Then comes Iron, which will be the most common material used.
Diamond is last, but is sparingly used due to its rarity. Use it wisely, as you are liable to only find a handful each map.

Other things can be only be made with the drops of mobs. For example,
spiders drop string, which can be used for a bow.
Skeletons drop whole arrows.
Zombies drop feathers, which can be used to make arrows.
Creepers drop gunpowder, which, along with a secret ingredient, can be used to make TNT.
Sometimes when gathering gravel, you gain flint. craft this with an iron bar to make flint and steel.
That is all. Enjoy the game!

First off, you should just

First off, you should just get logs from trees using your hands. After your first tree, using crafting, make a workbench , a wooden shovel and pickaxe. (Last two by using the workbench)

Use the shovel to cut through the dirt then use the pickaxe to mine as much stone as possible. Then use the stone to craft stone tools (by using the workbench).

Note: Underground bases are good in terms of protection but are limited in terms of resources. Stone is obviously in rich supply, but trees do not grow underground, you'll need to get wood from the topside.

Either stock up in a huge amount or just make an easy passage back and forth. Tree farms are excellent (placing trees 5 squares apart which brings me to my last note

ALWAYS PLANT!

Seriously, planting tree seeds is a lot easier than having to move your blocky rear over the map to find new trees. If you don't plant, they can become very few very quickly.

For old indevvers: Don't try to smelt with flint anymore, the blocks will simply be destroyed. You need to use a furnace.

Oh, p.s. final hint, I swear!

Your first priority should be to get coal after you have your stone tools (pickaxes are the most useful). Coal is used in torches, which will light up your base during the night, or at anytime if you're building underground. The second advantage to not walking into walls constantly because you can't see is torches prevent creeps from spawning in your base.

You could have the most securely locked down base ever but if there's a dark corner then you could find yourself in trouble. Don't attempt to build underground until you have a good stock of torches, which is easy enough to obtain, since one coal/stick creates 4 torches.
