I havn't bought minecraft yet though I've been playing it a lot as I downloaded it for free some time ago, problem is I can't have my own skin or play multiplayer or download mods or anything, so its not really minecraft...
anyway, I've been thinking about going ahead and buying the game so I can do all the stuff I currently can't, however, my laptop's pretty old and it's on its way out, so much so I'll be getting a new one on my birthday in October, so here's my question, if you buy the game, can you transfer it onto another computer? re-download etc, without having to buy it again? also, if you do switch computers, do you lose everything you've made?
this infomation would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to risk wasting my money or doing so much then loosing it all, thank you for your help!
also if this topic is in the wrong place im sorry haha
I knew about the re-download thing, but how do ya transfer saves? my old computer had some pretty ossim worlds and i dont know how to transfer them on my new one. Help plz jak?
- Press the windows key + R
- Type %appdata% and press enter
- Go into the .minecraft folder
- If you go into the folder named saves, that will have all of your single player worlds in it, you can just copy the one you want from the old computer to the new one.
Wait, but you can only copy/paste on one computer.
Put it on a memory stick or something, or upload it to something like mediafire or dropbox and download it again on your other computer.
Don't forget to put the files into the same place on the new computer.
OS X etc, it is located in;
/User/Name/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves
It that "saves" folder is what you want to transfer to your new computer.
Enjoy...
if thy get the same computer OS ie windows to windows (any version) Mac OS X (Any version) or Linux to Linux (any version) you can just move the whole .minecraft folder over to the new computer where it was
Minecraft is not supported on Windows 8.
yes it is as long as you have advanace GL Support on your graphics card
@Lightning - I run minecraft on windows 8, it works just like it would on any other machine. When Notch said he wasn't goign to support windows 8 he ment they weren't going to make an offical windows 8 App for it. Minecraft still runs on the desktop.
Longer answer for those who might appreciate more details:
The path for the folder containing your .minecraft folder in Windows is:
C:\Users\Angi\AppData\Roaming
The full path for your Minecraft save files in Windows is:
C:\Users\Angi\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves
(Substitute your own user name on your computer for "Angi", of course.)
For versions of Minecraft after 1.5.2 (currently, this means snapshot versions), there is a new launcher in the works, and the paths to the .jar files are slightly different. The new path is:
C:\Users\Angi\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\versions
In this folder, you will find a separate folder for each version of Minecraft you have downloaded, and within each version's folder is the .jar file for that version, and each version is named with the version name rather than all being named .minecraft.jar . Note that only the .jar file path has changed. The saves folder is still the same as above.
It's good to know these so you don't always have to search for them. I put a shortcut to that folder on my desktop, too. (You could put the shortcut wherever you typically launch Minecraft from, if not from your desktop.)
To move Minecraft to another computer, just copy the entire .minecraft folder from the Roaming folder of the old computer (see full path above) to the Roaming folder of the new computer. That will also copy all your saved worlds. You can do the copy via a thumb drive, via a cloud file hosting service, or just email yourself the file. You may want to compress the file first using Winzip or something similar. If you do, don't forget to de-compress it at the other end!
To move just a saved world after you've installed Minecraft on the new computer, just copy that world's entire folder, with all subfolders and files. You will find the world's folder in your saves folder (see full path above).
You can also make a backups folder, either inside your .minecraft folder, inside your saves folder, or elsewhere on your computer. When you want to make a backup, first quit out of the world you want to back up, then simply copy that world's folder into your backups folder (just as if you were copying it to a new computer). Then I like to rename my backups by appending "backup <n>" to the world's name, where <n> is the number of the backup. I keep my last 2 or 3 backups, and delete earlier ones. If you need to restore to a backup, then, just delete, move, or rename the existing world folder from the saves folder, then copy the desired backup folder back into your saves folder, and rename (if needed) to remove the "backup <n>" portion of the name.

If you make your account and buy the game, you only have to buy it once. After that, you can download it to any computer/laptop and log in. However, if you switch computers/laptops you will not have the same worlds, as the worlds are stored on the device, not in a Mojang database. If you want to keep your worlds, do this:
Click the Windows Start button at the bottom left of your screen.
Type in ' %appdata% '
Click on ' .minecraft '
Go to ' saves ' and you will find your worlds
Copy and paste them onto a USB
Download Minecraft on your new laptop/computer
Load up the game, then close it
Repeat the first four steps to get to ' saves '
There should be no worlds so far unless you created a world
Plug in your USB
Copy and paste the worlds you wanted to keep into the ' saves ' folder
And you should be good to go!

You can download it onto as many computers as you like, and it is very easy to transfer your saves from one computer to another.
