but it just doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong? I rename the skin.png to char.png, and overwrite it in Minecraft..jar ...
:(
Thanks black bird. So is it impossible? What exactly is the difference between uploading to minecraft.net preferences? I'm sure there's a way.
If theres a way i don't know what it is and neither do any of the other staff (it would have been mentioned in the staff channel and i would have seen it).
"What exactly is the difference between uploading to minecraft.net preferences?"
If you mean the difference between uploading to minecraft.net and changing char.png, like i said earlier char.png changes what everyone else looks like to you. If you made char.png into Frankenstein then everyone who -doesn't have a custom skin- will look like Frankenstein. Minecraft.net preferences is to set your own custom skin.
step 1: go to the minecraft website
step 2: log in
step 3: go to "preferences"
step 4: either download the image or right click it and "save image as"
step 5: (choice of software) I just found it, right-clicked it, selected edit, magnified to 8x and got editing.
hope this helps.
Step 0: Make sure you have bought Minecraft. If you are using a free account, there is NO workaround to get a skin. Player skins are hosted server side.

You can't change your skin by editting the minecraft.jar. Changing char.png changes what other players look like. To change your own skin (after buying the game) go to minecraft.net and click preferences.
