I have this problem too.
To fix it, you must everyday download new minecraft.jar from https://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftDownload/classic/minecraft.jar and place it into lib folder.
This "update" makes minecraft.jar 0 bytes

Make sure you have the latest client.
Also install 32 bit and 64 bit Java if you have windows 7.

i have the latest version and i install 32 bit and 64 bit java but still not working,btw do i put the latest version in the same folder?
