Lagging

Today Minecraft is lagging on me. The blocks reappear, the monsters lag, they're at one spot and then all of the sudden they are right next to me. Chat messages are lagging, come in late. Open chests, it takes a few seconds for it to open.
I have the latest Minecraft 1.2.4.
Any idea what I can do? I have scanned for virus/trojan, tested the bandwidth. Also lowered the game graphics, rendered distance to tiny, disabled fog/clouds.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, start killing processes while it's lagging to see if there's a specific culprit...

I did disable programs that wasn't needed. I'll try killing more to see if that helps. Thank you for the suggestions.

if you're playing on a server then it's the server lag, or you're half way across the world from the host.
if it's your computer on singleplayer, then you need a faster cpu :P

I usually lag if I'm
I usually lag if I'm downloading something but I will lag even more if I'm uploading something so check background programs.

Keep in mind always, things like skype, or any other sort of chat client or anything that requires a direct connection will cause your connection to any smp server to lag WAY down...
