Minecraft Apha Server Mods???

HI there
i created an alpha server which me and some of my friends use.
but the problem is that everytime they need something like wood or stone, i have to type it into the server prompt.
is there any mods or something that will allow them to give themselves things through the chat?

this may work on your server but i think you need to type in "/item" then you type in an object or a number.
this may only work on bwana's server but im not sure
